$10Transforming a “box on wheels” into a beautifully restored historic caboose
Founded in 1909, the Nevada Copper Belt Railroad was vital during the mining boom of the Lyon County region. Unfortunately, after it closed in the late 1940s, Nevada Copper Belt Caboose No. 2 was out of a job.
But this story has a happy ending, as we recently brought the caboose back to life. Whether you knew the caboose when it sat in Fernley before restoration, have seen its sister caboose (Nevada Copper Belt Caboose No. 3) at the Museum, or simply love Nevada’s rich railroad heritage, we’re excited to share and celebrate this story of triumph with you.
This talk is not just about the technical aspects of restoration but also about the passion and dedication that went into it. We’ll take you through the history of Nevada Copper Belt Caboose No. 2, including the year-by-year progress that brought it back to life. Join us to see what the caboose looked like in its heyday, hear stories on its movements, discover how we found the right people to handle the woodwork, metalwork and painting, and learn about our plans for the continued preservation of this remarkable piece of history.
